Elephant, Tarangire National Park, Tanzania
Elephant Shower

Species: Elephant | Location: Tarangire National Park, Tanzania

The day started with an animal-limited drive from Tarangire's main gate to the Silale swamp in the south end of the park. Silale proved no better, except for the flies!. It wasn't until we turned for home that Tarangire's elephants came out of the woodwork - literally. One minute nothing, the next a large herd of red elephants appeared out of the baobab trees and sauntered across the road. While most headed into the tall grass for lunch, this little one stopped to wallow in the cool of the pool. We spent the better part of 40 minutes watching the fun, and it sure looked like fun. Equipped with a built-in shower head water went everywhere - except on us, unfortunately. Given the rising temperature in the jeep we would have appreciated a chance to cool down!
