Borneo Pygmy Elephant, Kinabatangan River, Malaysia
Borneo Pygmy Elephant

Species: Borneo Pygmy Elephant | Location: Kinabatangan River, Malaysia

Along the Kinabatangan River in Sabah, Borneo, Malaysia, I got to see something that I had been waiting 30 years to see: the elusive Borneo Pygmy Elephant! We were half way through our 2 hour boat transfer from Sandakan to our resort, when all of a sudden a fisherman on a boat going in the opposite direction gave us two thumbs up...we knew something amazing had to be around the corner. Around the bend, we saw 10 pygmy elephants along the riverbed, slightly hidden by the trees. Babies and adults eating and roaming, it was truly a remarkable moment.
