Cardinal (Cardinalidae), Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park, United States of America
Pennyfield Lock Cardinal Eating Berry

Species: Cardinal (Cardinalidae) | Location: Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park, United States of America

I was enjoying a day off before Thanksgiving by walking the local tow path along the Chesapeake and Ohio (C&O) Canal. Cold weather had set in but that made the air very clear and while the morning was quiet, sound carried very well in the crisp air. There were very few animals about except a cluster of cedar waxwings, sparrows and cardinals that were attracted to the berries on a well-established huckleberry tree. I'm sure those berries had started to ferment, but perhaps the birds were getting started on Thanksgiving. The photo is of a cardinal eating perhaps one berry to many.

About The Photographer

I’ve been focusing my photography on nature and wildlife since 2014, focusing on habitats local to the Washington D.C. and Mid-Atlantic area. An additional interest is in using photography to get rescue dogs in the DC area adopted quicker, whether that is by putting their photos on social media or by providing photography services to the rescue organizations for them to use as a fundraiser.
