Species: African giraffe | Location: Masai Mara, Kenya
Toward the end of a long safari day in Kenya's Masai Mara National Park, we spotted a long giraffe in the tall grass of the African savannah. The austerity of the scene combined with the dramatic background sky as a storm approached from neighboring Tanzania in Serengeti National Park was surreal. I like this image for its simplicity. At the same time, there are the "three elements" that can help define what constitutes a successful image. In that respect, the eye focuses on the giraffe, the sunlit savannah, and the ominous background sky. It's said that painting is the art of addition, and photography is the art of subtraction. Africa's elemental nature comes together here, I feel.
