Species: African Hippopotamus | Location: Caprivi Strip, Namibia
I was on assignment in Namibia's lush Caprivi Strip, an appendage of the northeastern section of the country that intersects Angola, Zambia, Botswana and Zimbabwe along the Zimbabwe River corridor. While visiting the government-sanctioned Conservancies that fulfill a critical conservation role, I explored the labyrinth of wetlands and ponds where hippos, elephants and other wildlife congregate. The hippo here -- a young male -- was submerged when I was walking along the shoreline, then erupted out of water like a missile. I was at the right place at the right time, and despite the fading evening light, was successful at capturing this event. I was later told he was protecting is haram of females nearby.
