2016 Wildlife Photo Contest

African elephant, Tarangire, Tanzania
Ahh, I needed that dust bath

Species: African elephant | Location: Tarangire, Tanzania

We were watching a good-sized group of elephants with two nursing babies. The babies were unable to eat solid food yet, but when they weren't nursing they picked up pieces of grass and pretend to eat, practicing their skill at using their trunk . Often the food just ended up getting tossed around. The mom proceeded to shower herself with dust and I got this shot of the warm red dust swirling in the air. Immediately after I took the photo the young one started to copy her, using its tiny trunk to throw around some dust.
