Elephant, Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe
Mud bathing to cool off

Species: Elephant | Location: Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe

October is the hottest month in Hwange NP (and one of the driest), and we & the animals certainly felt it! We'd been on a safari drive all morning & stopped at this watering hole for lunch. We watched many animals & birds come to the hole during our ~90 minutes there, including this elephant. He first took long drinks using his trunk to skim the top of the water. Then he started mud bathing using his trunk to dig up the wet mud & fling it back onto his sides & back. This shot was taken just after the mud left his trunk. You can see mud blobs arc up over his head & land on his back. What a sight!
