Species: Brown bear | Location: Katmai NP, Alaska
One of the preferred fishing methods at Brooks Falls is to wait patiently in the swirling water, known as the "jacuzzi", at the base of the falls. Most practitioners appear to be dozing, eyes closed. But when a salmon that failed an attempted jump is washed against the bear's forepaws, a sudden plunge brings the surprised fish out of the water in the bears mouth. Sort of like dunking for salmon. Late evening light added clarity, richness, and highlights to the scene.
About The Photographer
After decades of travel and landscape photography using film equipment, I was introduced to digital SLR technology during a winter photography safari to Yellowstone in 2006. Digital techniques rejuvenated my photographic enthusiasm. Nature, wildlife, and landscape remain my principal subjects, with occasional forays into architectural and macro photography.
