2016 Wildlife Photo Contest

Caspian Tern, Long Beach, Washington, United States
Contrarian

Species: Caspian Tern | Location: Long Beach, Washington, United States

A group of Caspian Terns takes a break from searching for food early on the morning of July 13th, 2013 along the shore at Long Beach, Washington, USA. One of the birds has decided to be anti-establishment and eschew group think. I can hear him or her yelling "I AM NOT A LEMMING" even now... This photo was cropped from the as-taken 3:2 aspect ratio to a panoramic frame to emphasize the bird's direction of view and enhance the surprise provided when discovering the single contrarian in the shot.
