2016 Wildlife Photo Contest

Grey kangaroo, Ballarat Wildlife Park, Australia
Hungry Joey

Species: Grey kangaroo | Location: Ballarat Wildlife Park, Australia

I took this photo while on fieldwork in Victoria Australia, documenting Aboriginal Australian wildlife and knowledge. I stopped for a moment to feed some of the local grey kangaroos and this young joey came by and very politely, with its sweet innocent face, asked me for some food before diving in hand first into my feedbag. You can see the beauty, innocence and wisdom in his eyes, and yet there is also a sense of mischief and fun present as there is in all children when you take such a photo in such a circumstance. I felt like I had a true Aussie experience in that moment of natural, wild beauty mixed with fun, laughter and mischief which the Outback and its wildlife are world famous for.

Growing up in the SW deserts of New Mexico, I have always been enchanted by the colours of the surrounding nature, wildlife and plant life of the New Mexican desert. I carried this passion with me through my travels across the USA and to Australia and Spain where I am currently working in ecotourism and sustainable development and communications. I do not have a photography background per se, but I have a good eye for nature and catching wildlife and other natural beings in many of their changing and intriguing moods and unique behaviours on camera. I hope to be able to hone my camera technologies and photography skills through this trip in order to make my love for nature shine through the camera lens and and inspire others to love nature and see its wonders the way I have - in its unique, rare but true forms.
