Species: Panthera leo (African lion, female) | Location: Lake Nakuru National Park, Kenya
We were on a brief tour of the Lake Nakuru National Park when we heard over our guide's radio of a fresh kill of a young water buffalo. While driving to the reported area we saw this lioness slowly walking our way with the young water buffalo in her mouth. We simply stopped and quietly waited for her. As she came closer we could see that this lioness had past injuries to her hind quarters but was otherwise fit. She had crossed the road confidently within 10 yards of us and was headed for a clump of trees when I took this photograph. We were certain that she had cubs and perhaps a male lion waiting for her there.
The photo was handheld and was taken to isolate the lioness from the background, hence the aperture and shutter speed. Patience, stillness, and respect for the lioness in her habitat were an essential part of getting this photo.
