2016 Wildlife Photo Contest

Marmot, Rocky Mt National Park, Colorado, USA, USA
Longs Peak Marmot

Species: Marmot | Location: Rocky Mt National Park, Colorado, USA, USA

I was descending from the summit of longs Peak (14,255 ft elevation) and came across this very friendly fellow. He was about fourteen inches long and almost an emissary for Longs. I had to temper my excitement with caution, as there was a thousand foot drop on the other side of him. I was happy to get such a detailed shot of him, but also to capture the mountains and clouds in the background, to evoke the super thin, fresh air and the vast spaciousness all around.

About The Photographer

Chrystos is an avid hiker and swimmer, and loves to explore the Rocky Mountains' trails and lakes, flora and fauna; in glorious weather as well as "bad" weather! He feels our four legged friends can enrich us deeply - aesthetically, scientifically and spiritually. We should cherish and protect our friends on this planet, from lizards to moose to elephants. Even insects have deep lessons for us if we are willing to learn. Chrystos feels profoundly grateful to be alive, able, and photographing the flora and fauna of our awesome planet.
