Species: Black Howler Monkey | Location: Community Baboon Sanctuary, Belize
This photo was taken during a very special time in my life. I had just left my job 3 months ago, and decided to take advantage of the time off by traveling to a place I had always wanted to visit: Belize. This was the most adventurous trip I had been on to date by far. I was introduced to a friend of a friend who I was staying with in Miami at the time and we both were looking to travel. A few conversations later and I had booked a one-way ticket to Belize with no itinerary. On about the fourth day of my trip, I was staying in a small village named Bermudian Landing, about 45 minutes outside of Belize City, that was home to the Community Baboon Sanctuary, which was home to the Black Howler Monkey. On this morning I woke up early, just after sunrise, and left my cabana to be immediately greeted by Patch, one of the many village dogs who had taken a particular liking to me. My friend, Gaby, and I asked Roy, the lodge manager, if he could have a guide take us into the forest to see the howler monkeys. As our guide, Gaby, Patch, and I trekked into the forest it didn't take long before we heard their deep bellows, and then, almost instantly, we were surrounded by them. Mothers, fathers, babies, an entire troupe of howler monkeys climbing through the trees. I watched in awe as they ate cashew fruit and got more comfortable with our presence until I could start taking photos of them. I was able to take this photo as one of the monkeys sat in a tree and gazed out into the distance. It was an experience unlike any other I've had and I'll remember it for the rest of my life.
About The Photographer
I've been enamored by the natural world since I can remember. A few years ago, I discovered my passion for capturing the beauty of our world through photography. My goal is to convey the beauty, personality, and fragility of wildlife through my photographs and hopefully inspire a new appreciation for the animals we share this planet with.
