Species: Bison | Location: Grand Teton National Park, USA
My husband and I were hiking in the forests of Grand Teton NP during a day off from skiing last winter. It was a beautiful day, and from a distance, we could see a clearing ahead, and steam rising from the brooks and rivers that run through the park. We kept walking and eventually stepped out of the forest and into a clearing covered in snow. It was very quiet and very peaceful. We decided to walk along a brook which led us to a bend. We followed the brook through hot springs, around trees, and eventually around the bend. The landscape changed slightly, as some large boulders appeared over to the right. I looked around, and noticed their dark color; next, I noticed them move! Those weren't boulders at all, but a single, large, male bison standing behind a small hill and drinking from a stream. He lifted his head, and I could see the steam escaping his mouth and nostrils. It absolutely took my breath away ! Though I had seen bison in zoos before, I had never quite realized how huge and powerful they are until I was standing in that clearing in GTNP that day. I was in awe, and immediately started taking pictures, all the while making sure not to get to close to the majestic animal. The attached photos are some of my GTNP bison series, and they represent the beginning of my passion for wildlife photography. I have tried to improve on my photography since then, but would love to be able to gain more experience under the auspices of a seasoned professional !
