Black wasp, paper wasp(???), and one very small Monarch caterpillar., Texas, United States
Holding Pattern

Species: Black wasp, paper wasp(???), and one very small Monarch caterpillar. | Location: Texas, United States

Photo was taken on 10/18/15 in a small garden plot in my backyard where I had planted milkweed plants in the early spring. While I've seen a fair bit of Monarch butterfly traffic since they bloomed and have had at least two 'infestations' of Monarch caterpillars consuming the leaves, flowers and stems, the milkweeds bounced back quickly. I caught these two wasps as they were enjoying the milkweeds as I alternated photo taking between the activity in the milkweeds and photographing jet and propeller war planes as they passed at low altitude over my house--I live near Ellington Airport where the big Wings Over Houston Airshow was being conducted that day.
