Species: Brown bears | Location: Katmai National Park and Preserve, USA
A mother brown bear led her three cubs across a river and up the other side of the bank over to my guide and me as we squatted in the rain on the shores of Hallo Bay in Katmai, Alaska. A large male paced the beach about 100 yards away, and the mother bear used us as a buffer of sorts. We “babysat” her cubs while she fished the river below. The cubs took a nap less than 10 feet away from where I sat dripping wet and awestruck—but also silent and still.
