Species: Red Eyed Tree Frogs | Location: Tirimbina Rainforest Reserve, Costa Rica
Red-Eyed tree frog is one of the iconic frogs of Costa Rica. Its bright colors and soulful eyes make it easy to love. I took a night tour with a local guide; just the two of us. It was December and this night was steamy and humid. With flashlights, we headed out. He was able to spot numerous frogs. Some were very small and some were quite large. They were lurking under the brush, on the leaves, on the trunks of trees. We found this mating pair and numerous others. Though iconic in nature, they are only, perhaps, two inches long. As with many species, the female is the larger of the species. Red-Eyed Tree frogs are losing critical habitat due to deforestation.
About The Photographer
After taking an early retirement from teaching art at a small rural high school in Northern Vermont, I knew what I wanted to do with my time. I wanted to visit and photograph as many of nature’s wonders as time and money would allow. I felt a particular urgency to see some of the wildlife that is threatened by climate change. I wanted to be witness to the elegance and grandeur that future generation might miss.
