Species: Sea Turtles | Location: Akumal public beach, Mexico
This photo was taken off the very public beach at Akumal, Mexico. The turtles feed in, perhaps, 8 feet of water and seem oblivious to all the snorkels around. The beauty of this photo for me is that the natural wonders of the world were available to all and free of charge. All anyone needed was a snorkel to experience these gentle creatures. I don't know what the fish were, but they clung to the turtle's backs and underbellies, living in a complete symbiotic relationship with the turtles.
About The Photographer
After taking an early retirement from teaching art at a small rural high school in Northern Vermont, I knew what I wanted to do with my time. I wanted to visit and photograph as many of nature's wonders as time and money would allow. I felt a particular urgency to see some of the wildlife that is threatened by climate change. I wanted to be witness to the elegance and grandeur that future generations might miss.
