Species: Monarch Butterfly | Location: El Rosario Sanctuary, Mexico
Ever since the wintering grounds of monarchs was found in Mexico, I vowed to someday see them in person. It, indeed, was profound when we hiked high into the mountains to find millions clustered together in massive clumps, clinging to oyamel trees. With the first shaft of sunlight, the cluster exploded into millions of flying monarchs. It was breathtaking. A single monarch chose to land on me which made the encounter all the more personal. The little creature had flown three thousand miles with all kinds of experiences along the way; and for a brief, quiet moment, there was a connection between his and my worlds.
