Species: Brown/Grizzly Bear | Location: Katmai National Park; Alaska, USA
These two grizzly bears were trying to catch 6-8 pound sockeye salmon at the top of Brooks Falls when the more distant bear caught one. The nearer bear was about 10 feet away and decided that he wanted that salmon. He charged and in the brief fight that occurred, the salmon was dropped and went back down over the falls with very visible tooth marks along its side. The challenger realized the loss and the more dominant bear gave him a thorough chewing out. On magnification of the open mouth it is clear that the grizzly who caught the salmon was old as indicated by his worn flat teeth; however, he was not quite ready to allow a younger bear to assume any of his dominance. The sequence was caught on a rapid series of 14 shots.
