African Wild Dog (Lycaon Pictus), Linyanti Region , Botswana
African Wild Dog (Painted Wolf)

Species: African Wild Dog (Lycaon Pictus) | Location: Linyanti Region , Botswana

This African wild dog (although I prefer the more colorful "Painted Wolf") was spotted with its kill just after sunset. We were on the Nat Hab Secluded Botswana Photo Safari. The animal seemed agitated; he/she kept walking away from the kill, looking around and wandering off in different directions, then coming back. Our super guide, Dave Luck, explained to us that the wild dog wanted to call out to his/her family to come share the bounty, but was afraid to call out, for fear of alerting hyenas or lions that there was fresh food nearby. Raw nature at its finest!
