Orb spider, Holland Street, Fremantle, Western Australia, Australia
Orb's Nightly Web Construction

Species: Orb spider | Location: Holland Street, Fremantle, Western Australia, Australia

For what ever reason, this beautiful orb spider chose my front porch to hide during the day and build her web in the evening. The location was perfect for photography. The use of a ring flash against a dark background allowed the spider to be photographed without any distractions. We developed an interesting relationship. Although my presence and camera set up distracted her at first, she seemed to accept me as part of the natural non-threatening environment. As this photo shows, I was able to learn her work schedule and take a photo at the beginning of the web building process. She tolerated hundreds of flash bursts as she busily shot silk from her vent and built lovely webs. In exchange for tolerating me, I sometimes caught gnats and threw them in the web. After about a week, no more orb. Maybe a bird ate her. I don't know, but as strange as it seems, I missed our evenings.
