Species: Komodo Dragon | Location: Komodo National Park, Indonesia
The magnificent Komodo Dragons populating Rinca and Komodo Islands of Indonesia are endangered due to encroachment of population. The government has established a national park on the inlands to help protect them. Visiting the park is quite an experience because the dragons run free and park rangers are often teens armed with pointed sticks. The dragon's saliva contains deadly pathogens as well as recently identified venom. Their markings render them difficult to see when walking in the park. The rangers have keen eyes. The knowledge that a bite will be a death sentence make this a potentially dangerous travel destination; however, the opportunity to see and photograph these beautiful creatures makes the trip worthwhile.
