Cape Buffalo with Red-billed Ox Pecker

Species: Cape Buffalo | Location: Maasai Mara, Kenya

One of the Big Five of game animals, Cape or African buffalo (Syncerus caffer) is one of Africa’s most dangerous animals as it has killed more hunters than any other animal. The ox pecker, on the other hand, is the Cape Buffalo’s personal cleaner. It will sit on the Cape buffalo’s back, gobbling up all the parasites and making the buffalo much more comfortable, while the ox pecker gets a free meal. It’s a symbiotic relationship where everybody wins — except the parasites.
