A Snake in the Grass

Species: Mole Snake | Location: Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Botswana

The green season grass is high in the Central Kalahari and hides many snakes... The guides are very astute as they find the snakes by looking at the tracks on the road. If the track overlays the track of recent tire tracks then the snake is near and can often be found just near the road, as this mole snake was. Although not venomous, this snake can deliver a painful bite with its back pointing teeth which also can tear the flesh. Like pythons and their ilk the mole snake is a constrictor. Quite beautiful with its interlaced pattern of gray and black. This one was some two meters in length. This photo was taken on safari in Botswana with Nat Hab.
